Custom stand or modular stand: how to make the right choice

Budget, image, number of shows, lead time: the criteria for choosing between a bespoke stand and a reusable modular one, and the options that combine both.

It is often the first question a company asks when preparing a trade show: should we invest in a fully bespoke stand, or choose a reusable modular structure? There is no universal answer, but a few criteria make the decision quick.

What sets the two apart

A custom stand is designed and built for you: shapes, materials, volumes, lighting, everything revolves around your brand and products. It offers maximum visual impact and complete freedom.

A modular stand uses a standard structure (frames, panels, printed fabric) assembled to fit the space. It goes up quickly, travels easily and can be reused from one show to the next by simply changing the visuals.

Criterion 1: the goal of the show

If you are launching a product, repositioning your brand or exhibiting at the biggest show in your sector, the impact of a custom stand can justify the investment. If the goal is to be present regularly to meet existing customers, a well-designed modular stand is often enough.

Criterion 2: how many shows per year

This is the deciding factor. A modular stand pays off the more often you use it. From two or three shows a year, it makes sense to think in cost per participation rather than total cost.

Criterion 3: overall budget

A custom stand requires a higher budget for each show (design, build, setup, often disposal). A modular stand concentrates spending on the first purchase, then only costs transport, setup and printing.

Criterion 4: lead time

A bespoke stand needs several weeks between approval of the 3D render and setup. A modular stand can be ready much faster, which makes it a good option when you register late.

Criterion 5: space and layout

On small spaces, a well-fitted modular stand is often as effective as a custom one. On large spaces, island stands or two-level builds, bespoke design lets you create real areas: welcome, demonstration, meeting lounge.

The middle ground: the hybrid stand

More and more companies combine both: a reusable modular base enriched with custom elements (counter, totem, image wall, furniture, lighting). You get a strong identity while controlling costs across several shows. Elements can be stored between events.

In short

  • A major show, a launch, a strong image at stake: custom stand.
  • Several shows a year, controlled budget, short lead times: modular stand.
  • Regular presence with a strong identity: hybrid stand.
